Hi Behaving.
That's a loong journey.
Worth it when you get there though it will be pretty busy.
Make sure you have accommodation arranged.

The other week in Motor Cycle News there were a few very nice routes being shown as good alternatives to avoiding the main roads from about Gretna up towards Inversnesckie.

I'm sure these were posted by the man who runs https://www.motorcyclescotland.com/ and owns the Buccleugh Arms Hotel in Moffat (which would be a good stopover on your route).

If you feel the NC500 is too far  journey, there are many glorious roads in  Dumfries & Galloway and the Borders.

Also Scotland's NE250 is worth considering -https://www.northeast250.com/interactive-map/

Hope you get the weather whatever you decide.

The NC500 are my local roads for a ride out. Things to be mindful of:

1. Foreign drivers on single track roads. If they panic, they instinctively move to the right (their normal escape route)
2. Foreign drivers turning into main roads from single track roads.
3. Wildlife..... it's big!!. If you hit any it will hurt.
4. Getting carried away. Some visitors think they can ride better than some of the roads allow. They are often wrong
5. Refuel at half a tank if the opportunity arises, you will be off the beaten track and petrol stations can be hard to find.

Lastly, Appoecross is an absolute must, but it can be exceptionally testing if you meet something coming the other way when you have passed  a passing place.

That's the negatives, the positives are to many to mention. Some truly fantastic roads and a distinct lack of police ( although rare, there are some).  I hope you have a great time.

I did it a couple of years ago from Devon. Stayed at The Buccleigh Arms in Moffat going up and coming back. Second day Moffat to Inverness and then westwards around the nc500 route. I think l was away for 10 days but you should be able to do it in 8. Iíll let the local lads be more specific about routes.
Avon skin so soft for the midges.
Have a great trip

And locals recommend going around it anticlockwise - it worked for us. (although on the way back to Moffat a deer committed suicide on the front of the bike in front of me - a detour to Inverness to replace front brake lever coupled with a lot of plastic ties and half of my role of Gaffa tape got him back to the South coast!)

Hi Pan404.
What's your thoughts on the NE250, given that it is on your doorstep?

Hi Chay,

One of the points on the route, Fochabers, is only 8 miles from my home. I've ridden all the roads but never in a one'r.

The roads along the East coast can get a little busy. The North coast a little less so. My favourite part of the run is to and from Tomintoul which I often visit (my daughters Father in Law lives there). The roads around Braemar are also good and can at times be quite testing.

That said, my preference would be the NC500 mostly due to the variety of roads

So Iíve just got back👍
1880 miles in 7 days,I did the initial bit upto inverness from Exmouth in 1 go and was 634 miles.
The next 5 days was traveling the route anti-clockwise with the best bits between Durness-Ullapool,the last section towards Applecross had the pass of the cattle section but the single track road was too busy with campers🤨.
The midges are a nightmare but I didnít get bitten once, apparently they prefer women, fuel is not a problem with it being available through the route
