Thanks for the maths lesson.  Accept your principal however................

Don't know how much quicker an LED strikes up the band but I doubt if it is instant and even if it was I also doubt if my reaction times would allow me to take advantage of the quicker speed.

Anyway, got to say that don't ride on the tail/brake light of the vehicle in front of me, I usually be at least 2 to 4 cars in front of me and further at higher speeds on a motorway.

Your reaction time won't be different, but you will start reacting as soon as the red light appears, and for an LED (which lights up almost instantly) this is a fraction sooner than for a filament bulb (which takes time to heat up and start glowing) - those extra couple of yards really may make the difference.

One thing about fitting an LED into a light designed for a filament bulb though - the reflector is designed to reflect light from a filament bulb which shines in all directions - an LED is directional and so won't shine any light back towards the reflector; this may be why there is an apparent difference in real-life appearance (rather than quoted light intensities or eyeballing the bulbs head-on).

That may be the case with some LED bulbs but look at http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/380-led-bulbs-c-1064.html   The bulb some of us have is the http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/380-360-degree-led-extreme-power-5w-new-c-1064-p-1-pr-17111.html in RED and they do fill the reflector but they have just started selling some others which may need investigating.  Possible progress ?

It is all down to choosing the right bulb.  At the moment there is no prescribed standard so it is pot luck but some bulbs are better than others and this is a good bulb, in your face and fills the reflector.

Reviving a dead thread here as had the same problem. No idea where it fell off.
I've ordered a new one from Fowlers - thanks for the advice on not over-tightening.
I'll report back once it is fitted.
