All for using whatever there is on the shelf which is how I come to run out of the black satin Hammerite. Chose this over the silver Hammerite I did the front forks with, its water based, easier to apply and if how it sticks to your skin is anything to go by it'll do a turn. Time will tell.

Just to be clear, not bought for the purpose just what I had on the shelf in the shed. The second coat is just about dry, waiting for Postie to deliver the replacement 'All Balls' bearing kit to re-assembly the front end. In the meantime, the centre stand and side stand were looking a little worse for wear having had three coats of Hammerite black 3 years and 30,000 miles ago, I gave them both a quick in situ one coat 'direct to metal and rust' lick.

Looks to be about half the price of Hammerite, easier to apply, easier to clean brushes (water based). When applying it has a blue hue which is really useful when applying several coats.

Time will tell

Ah this is why you're Art, Artistic, we get it now, lol. Can you put some pics up of the centre and side stands, mine are looking rather grubby too.

With the steering stem I attacked it with a Dremel type tool to remove all the rust and gave it two brush coats and to be fair it looks almost new. For the stands I just gave them a quick going over with a coarse wire brush, a dousing with brake cleaner and a quick lick with a paint brush and it shows up to be just that, a proper slap dash job. Paint finish is all in the prep and the prep here was very minimal. The idea being to test how well the paint stands up when applied direct to metal and rust. The instructions claim "Wickes Satin Metal Paint can be applied directly onto metal surfaces without the need for a separate primer or undercoat. It can also be applied direct to rust". We will see, time will tell. Not proud of the finish but here are the stands after one quick lick
