Mixed feelings

When I ride my bike and exchange nods with other riders it gives me a satisfying sense of belonging to the motorcycling community.
But recently I was waiting at a junction giving way to traffic and a passing motorcyclist nodded at me. He was riding a hearse. I returned the nod but my feelings were mixed - was it a sign of good luck or quite the opposite?

If I was a gambling man I'd wager you're good for a few years yet 

I remember back in the day having finally convinced my girl friend Joyce to ride pillion we set off for a long weekend camping tour of Somerset. There was no nodding back then a simple hand wave was the motorcyclist to motorcyclist gesture of the day. After about 10 miles of the A406 North Circular Road and having exchanged salutations with more motorcyclists than I can remember Joyce exclaimed "Christ you don't 'arf know a lot of people"

When I came to live in the UK in 1999 I was looking for a flat to rent. The estate agent was driving me for viewings. Every time someone gave way to him he was giving them a 'thank you' wave. I kept thinking to myself: "Gosh, this man knows everyone in town!"

In the old days, before indicators, we had friction screws on the throttle so we could do arm signals while keeping forward momentum. As that is not possible for most of to-day's bikes we now have to wave with our left arms, while on the continent it is customary to wave a leg. 
(But not at high speed as it can be painful as well as make the bike veer!)
