The under tank fuel pipe is damaged and I've got a replacement, it looks like it's got some sort of red adhesive holding it on.
What adhesive is this? or would a metal clip be ok?
    thanks

I'm assuming here it's the stock factory fitting and you mean the fuel hose and not the fuel pipe. Hoses are flexible and made of rubber/plastic, pipes are rigid and made of metal/PVC. If the "red adhesive" is holding the fuel hose connector onto the fuel pipe that's all wrong, such are the joys of owning a used motorcycle fettled by folk not allowed spanners. If I was a gambling man I'd wager that "red adhesive" was an unnecessary smear of Hermetite, Hylotyte, RTV silicone or something similar. Clean it all off and refit the fuel hose connector to the fuel pipe dry. The manuals suggest replacing the retainer clips, I'd reuse them, your choice) if its difficult to slide the hose connector onto the fuel pipe give the fuel pipe a light spray of maintenance spray such as Triple QX maintenance spray or if you must reassuringly expensive WD40.

Having typed all that it now occurs to me you may be referring to the fuel tank breather hose or the fuel tank drain hose, both of these hoses just push on with no need to use adhesives, clamps or sealants, the assumption here is the replacement hose is of the correct composition and internal diameter.

Now I'm curious to know what was the damage to the "under tank fuel pipe" and which pipe (or hose) it was?

If you’re allowed spanners and you haven't already, you may want to download the Honda Workshop and Owners Manuals here. Section 6 of the workshop manual FUEL SYSTEM (PGM_FI) should be an interesting read.

It's the rubber hose that connects under the tank to the metal fuel pipe that comes off the sender/fuel pump.
I wanted to remove the tank and found that the hose is purposely glued to the metal pipe and has a metal clip on it also.
I've managed to get the rubber hose off but there's some damage caused to the internal part of it due to the red glue/adhesive used.
I'm going to snip 1" off the hose and refit it but wondered if the adhesive was necessary to provide a stronger bond due to the injection pump doing it's job rather being gravity fed?
I didn't want to remove the hose 'banjo' as the manual states and cause further problems/leaks due to the bikes age.
I'll clean the glued on rubber bits off metal pipe, snip 1" off the rubber hose, put the hose on dry and put a new metal clip on as you state.
    Thanks for replying.
