Stripped clutch cover bolt

Hi lads,
I have a stripped thread on my clutch cover, would it be possible to insert a heli coil with the cover in place, don’t want to remove cover as it’s only weeping oil through the bolt, or what’s the best way to repair this.

Fitting a helicoil is the best fix and you'll have to remove the cover because you'll need to drill an over size hole.

Note if oil is weeping through the bolt hole that is because the RTV sealant between the cover and casing has failed, it will only get worse and the cover will eventually need to be removed and resealed, so you may as well get on with it now. I wonder if that is how the threads became stripped in the first place. Due to someone repeatedly tightening and over tightening the bolt in an attempt to stop the weeping oil?

Assuming you're allowed spanners its a 'simple skills' job. Check the bolt threads, if they are damaged the bolt will need replacing. To repair the bolt hole you'll need a M6 helicoil kit' the kit will include the correct oversize HSS drill bit, tap, insert tool, helicoils, punch and instructions. Drill out the hole at a slow (200-300 RPM) speed using a depth gauge or wrap some tape around the drill bit as a guide. Not essential, just my preference, I like to install helicoils using Loctite 243 medium strength threadlocker and to leave 24 hours to fully cure before installing the cover and bolt. Use a magnet attached to the side of a No1 cross point screwdriver to retrieve the helicoil tab from the blind hole. You'll also need some RTV silicone sealant gasket maker, clear for the SC58 or black for SC64, to re-seal the cover, clean off any old sealant before applying the new sealant and keep the sealant clear of the bolt holes. When fitting the cover you may want to use a torque wrench to ensure you don't go monkey boy and strip another thread, Honda specify the torque wrench setting as 10 Nm for the 6 mm shank, 8 mm head, small flange bolts. IMPORTANT - If using a torque wrench clean and dry the bolts and install them into clean and dry bolt holes.

Do any of you guys know is there a gasket available for this instead of using gasket maker

No gasket, what's wrong with RTV?

Nothing wrong with rtv, I just thought there might be aftermarket gasket available

If you want the extra work you could make a gasket from gasket paper, tapping it out on the clutch cover with a ball pein hammer before cutting the outline and pressing the holes. To do a proper job after making the gasket you will still need to clean off any old sealant, apply RTV to the casing, fit the gasket to the casing, apply a smear of grease to the gasket, fit the cover and bolt it up. After all that extra work all you have achieved is to place three additional layers between the casing and cover to create an inferior seal.

Applied correctly you won't form a better seal than RTV silicone sealant.
