    hi all
ok, changed the stator yesterday, wanted to post a pic of the (very obviously) burnt out one but file is apparently too big. Couple of minor issues with the chinese UK stock stator, the cable clamp sat too proud of the windings to get it to sit flat on the mounting, so i undid it and bent the thin metal clamp to a flatter shape, all good. Next one was the rubber grommet was bigger than the old one so i shaved it down with a stanley knife again all good. Finally the cable sheathing didnt reach right to the grommet end so i used a bit of the sheath from the old one and taped it on to make absolutely sure its weatherproof.
Process is not daunting at all for anyone faced with it. Art's testing process was spot on so i was able to be sure it was the stator, (well so far!). I'm very average with the spanners and electrics are a black art to me but anyone who can change an oil and filter can change a stator.
Thanks to Art i now know the basics of using a multitester and will periodically do the basic charging checks going forward.
All tests show everything within spec and will do a few shortish trips to make sure all is good.

The trimming of the rubber grommet shows up in the reviews, nothing a sharp blade couldn't fix.

    Well done, happy days

yeah i saw the previous notes about the grommet.
In true bodging fashion i wondered if the act of doing up the bolts would squash it into place, but much easier to trim it and be sure than have to take it to bits again, more sealant, more time ,more mess, all for the sake of 10 minutes.

That's not bodging, that's Man made in a shed modification to the highest of quality control standards at a saving of two full tanks of go go juice!

You'll have to report back here from time to time and let us know how the UK stock Chinese stator is performing. My 5 year old, 32,000 mile EuroSport stator may be due for replacement soon. My charging system output is showing signs of deterioration, the 14.2v at 4,000 RPM has recently been dropping by 0.1v at each of last three 4,000 mile service intervals. Yes, I check the charging system output every 4,000 miles and note the results for future reference, its still good for now and producing a healthy 13.9v at 4,000 RPM

lol i'll remember the technical description of bodging for future reference!
I will now be completely OCD with checking the charging system output at regular intervals, something ive never done, (probably because i didnt know how to). :155:
Out if interest Art why do you check it at 4000 rpm rather than 5000 as in the testing doc?
i feel a spreadsheet of the results coming on, will take readings now, then build up a table as i go along. i only do 5000 a year so might do it more regularly to reassure myself i wont be sitting waiting for the breakdown guy, though it was the only time in 8 years.
could be much worse, i could own a BMW or KTM. :150:

I keep all my servicing records and notes in an Excel workbook

I test the charging system at 4,000 RPM only because 5,000 RPM is too loud in my shed, besides past experience has shown no difference in the output between 4,000 and 5,000 RPM
