When I need a free hand I use these, two sizes both much smaller than the Optimate clips

On a serious note, how far would a bike with a fully charged battery but failed stator, travel before coasting serenely to a halt in the fast lane? (say someone  had to get to a dealer from home).

Of course in reality you'd ride in lane one in readiness to pull onto the hard shoulder :016:

I've covered 70 miles with a failed stator and a battery that had too little in it to crank the engine over, starting out with a fully charged battery I'd expect 200 miles or more especially if you disconnected all the 'unnecessary' electrics.

recent thread discussing just that here

I guess at the end of the day its down to how good the battery is

    thanks art makes sense
so when mine started but died when bumped, is that just down to how low the battery was? )The breakdown guy said the batt was down to 4%)

If that breakdown guy had 'boosted' your battery it may have got you home (how far was that?), who knows.

The thing to remember is to pull the headlight fuse (for daytime travel) and use hand signals  :005: (standard indictors use a lot too).

Thanks JM interesting stuff, i was about 60 miles from home, the breakdown guy just said it was draining his portable starting thing, never offered me a boost, i would have taken it and got home in half the time... BUT, at the end of the day it happened in the car park of a coffee shop on a beautifully sunny evening, so be thankful for small mercies etc!

That's a result, the norm is on a cold, wet, moonless night in the middle of the back of beyond.
