has anyone changed the reg/rec or stator as a precuationary measure? would anyone recommend doing it? im coming up to 40k on a mk 1, not a moments trouble so far, i m inclined to leave well alone, what does everyone think?

STOP IT, if it ain't broke don't fix it!

The SC58 CBF1000 Regulator/Rectifier is a robust MOSFET unit and is most unlikely to cause any issues. The stator, in common with other models and marques, has been known to fail but why replace parts willy nilly when the the parts you're replacing may be in a better, tried and tested condition than the replacements? For peace of mind you'll be far better off testing the Charging System. I test the Charging System of my SC58 every 4,000 miles and note the results for future reference. For example, 14.2v measured across the battery terminals at 5,000 RPM dropping to 14v at 5,000 RPM 4,000 miles later may be a sign of a failing stator, obviously further tests would be required to prove any fault.

I did a post on How I test the Charging System here

Great Art, many thanks, i'll get into the habit of checking the charging system as you say.

R/R - no.  Not many fail.

Stator - no.  Unless you are about to tour (where?) and then only to have one at hand to fit.
Some replacement stators seem not to last as long as Mr Honda's.

If you are really bothered, for the sake of a bit of RTV you could take the cover off next oil change and take a look at the condition of the coils.

Do the voltage measurements now (for reference) and compare them next service.

Great, many thanks, i do tour each year (spain/portugal) but next one wont be until May so no panic, will teach myself the black art, (to me) of using a multitester to keep an eye on things. Typical, i've just changed the oil ahead of the winter ,anyway i'll do the voltage tests as described.
Thanks for all the help once again.

You won't loose much oil - if on the centre stand!
I was just thinking when drained would be better.
But you'll need some rtv sealant.

I wouldn't bother with a visual inspection, if the numbers stack up its good to go. Carrying spare parts, any spare parts, is just an admission that your service and maintenance schedule isn't what it should be. Test the charging system regularly every 4,000 miles and keep a note of the numbers for future comparison. Of the 1,000's of tours completed on the SC58 CBF1000 I've only ever heard of one claimed stator failure on tour. There was no mention of how the failure was diagnosed but lets assume the stator did fail, I only mention this because I've heard of far too many stators, regulator/rectifiers and batteries being unnecessarily replaced. My unanswered question of that one failure was "had the charging system been tested prior to touring or ever tested for that"?

A recent experience of mine just this week, Tuesday 21st December I took part in the IBA UK shortest day of the year ride, Sunrise in Norwich and Sunset in Dumfries via Wrexham and return to Norwich 800+ miles in two days. On Monday I carried out an 8,000 mile service, including a charging system output test, and all was fine. First thing Tuesday morning and for no apparent reason I have a slow crank no start issue, I suspect the 7+ year old battery but it needs to be proved before I replace it. I charged the battery for 5 minutes on a 4A charger and it's back on the button with the engine firing up instantly. To be sure, to be sure I tested the charging system output at 14.1v at 5,000 RPM and we're good to go. The motorcycle was left out to the elements overnight in Dumfries and Wednesday morning the engine fired up on the button in -1°C without any hesitation. All of which is proof enough to me that for now the charging system is good and the battery is holding charge. Why the slow crank no start issue Tuesday morning? I don't know, maybe I left the ignition, lights and other electrics on for too long when servicing the motorcycle on Monday.

If it ain't broke don't fix, most on road breakdowns can be traced back to a failure in the service and maintenance schedule.

Thanks for all your time on this Art, (nice to hear someone else has heard of wrexham, i was born there and lived there till i was 11.)
I suppose we all like to think we're meticulous and asking the questions at least proves we care !
I'm gonna stick with the charging system test routine, well once i've bought a multitester and worked out how to use it, been meaning to do that for years.
I bought the CBF after a blackbird which i loved, seven years later, pound for pound its been the best bike ive ever owned, (since 1976).
Six tours of spain totalling 10,000 miles and only a blown tail light bulb during the whole lot. All over North wales in winter numerous times, never a single failure of any sort, ok it lives in the lounge permanently on an optimate but maybe you get out what you put in etc....
i wonder if the NT1100 will be as good.

My son has a Blackbird but his wife wouldn't ride pillion and he really didn't ride it much. He then 'bought' my seven year old CBF1000 and although he called it his moped, he and his wife have covered many thousands of miles using it to expand his gardening customers, stretching as far as Burnham and Swindon (from Clevedon on the coast West of Bristol where he lives). His car was far too thirsty so he only used it when he needed to take machinery if not available locally. It was only last week they used the like to go for their booster jab the other side of Bristol. It must have taken some time to 'bare' an arm!
I wonder if he'll ever get around to get his Blackbird back on the road and selling it???????

    Hi,

On the second replacement of my stator, to be fair they were both reconditioned ones and only lasted 2 years, in Greece I reckon the temperature plays a significant role, anyway looking for a decent replacement that will not bankrupt me, any ıdeas or suggestions?
