Cush drive rubbers

I've just removed the rear wheel and the cush drive rubbers are missing - why would anyone choose to remove them?..  I've ordered replacements but cannot imagine why someone took them out ..I've done 12,000 miles since I bought the bike not knowing this

Strange! My only suggestion is that either the owner or a tyre fitter forgot to replace them when changing a tyre. (They can break up with poor gear changing and some people just pad them out with bits of rubber.) Oh another thought, perhaps the owner ordered new cush rubbers and in the mean time assembled it as a temporary measure for some reason. 

I hope there isn't damage!

  Never heard of such. 

Without trying it I have no direct experience, but I'd have expected the backlash to have been overwhelming.
Is the correct flange present ? (I'm just wondering if a different wheel has been fitted).
