New screen for tall rider?
« on: 10 March, 2020, 04:25:02 AM »
Hello

Any guidance and feedback would be greatly appreciated.

The original screen on my 2007 Mk1 is aesthetically in poor condition. (Itís like a tinted colour - badly faded and scratched.
And from bits that I have picked up on this forum may be a bit too low for me?

I am six feet tall and this is my first motorcycle.

A lot of riders seem to favour the MRA screens? And having looked into them a bit online it appears that for tall riders their Ď X-creení is recommended?
I was wondering has anyone had the same dilemma and purchased one? And what are they like in practice?

Also are there any other favoured or recommended screens for taller riders? If so what makes and models do you suggest or recommend?

Also, this may seem like a stupid question to experienced and knowledgeable CBF owners and riders but what do you think are the pros and cons of both clear and tinted screens? Iím unsure as to which one to go for and donít have a clue regarding the practical differences when riding.

Any help to see the wood for the trees, as they say, would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks
Regards
Riverman

In case you donít know the screen is adjustable to high and low positions, the seat can be adjusted to three positions and also the rear suspension. Adjustments to all three can lower you down behind the screen.

Personally I swapped my touring screen for a shorter one in dark tint and it looks really good. The wind seems to go round my neck and shoulders, and use a good AGV helmet and silk balaclava to reduce wind noise. Not planning on any long, monotonous rides on the motorway so does me nicely.

Having to look through a dark screen would reduce your ability to spot potholes etc on the road.

Might be selling my touring screen so keep an eye on the for sale page on the forum, also chrome Beowulf radiator guard.

No problem Riverman, you can also buy a clip-on extension for the windscreen. Not sure of their proper name but there might be a thread on the forum somewhere. Youíll just have to tinker about until you find the right set up. Just donít tighten the screws too much when fitting the screen as it will keep tightening until it bends, and some. Also how much you weigh will affect the suspension but also the handling. You should have a C Spanner in the tool kit to adjust rear suspension if youíve got one.

Thanks for the PM, sent one back.

I am using the Givi windshield, and lately becoming fond of deflectors.  They are fully adjustable and you can tune it to reduce windnoise.   I got one of these, there are two sizes, I'm using the larger on the Biffer at the moment, works fine.  Cheap enough to give it a try.

I've got this MRA fitted, and bought it brand new direct from MRA years ago:

I've found it much better than the Honda original, far less buffeting & windblast, though you'll never get rid of it all, especially if you hit above 70mph, such as 72 or 73 etc. Cough, cough.

Never had the spoiler piece so can't comment on that.

As for the tinted or not version, it was just aesthetics for me, much preferred the tinted version personally.  :028:

If you need to adjust the screen might I suggest getting adjustable screen fixings called "Palmer Products" they make things a lot easier to adjust?

I fitted the brackets from Palmer Products to the givi screen that was already on my bike. As you said, plenty of adjustments to find out what works best for you. Works great for me. They say the gap created under the screen after fitting the brackets is part of the design, and creates a counter draft to the one coming from the top of the screen, or something like that from memory.

Having got the givi touring screen. I tried the MRA vario touring screen (with the spoiler). Both an improvement on standard. But no major difference between the 2 in my opinion.

Here are a couple of cheaper alternatives to the MRA screens, I have tried the first one on my girlfriends CB600 with her standard screen and it works okay doesn't look too out of place and she's over the moon with it. the seconds I haven't tried but put it here for comparison.
