hi all,
 going on a long trip to Orkney, my question is what tyre pressure  should the tyres be the bike will have 2 up plus luggage, at the moment they are at 36psi f and 42psi r do you have to up the pressures at all,  been  riding bikes for years but has puzzled me a bit can't find any other info in the hand book.

I’ve got a MK2 FAB. 36 front, 42 rear at all times.

I’m sure someone will disagree, but I’ve stuck to these pressures and had no problems whilst touring fully laden.

As Phild said, I've never had any issues at the pressures quoted.

If you are going from where I think to the Orkneys (and back) you'll want fresh rubber - some of those Scottish roads are quite abrasive (the granite in the compound) and can eat tyres at a greater rate - but ought to provide awesome grip in the dry

I use those roads all the time. I've yet to experience the additional tyre wear you mention.

As long as you have enough mileage and some spare left in your tyres for the journey, you should be fine

I would only add that you're highly unlikely to square off your tyres in this part of the UK

Hi Guys sorry for the late reply been a bit busy, well did the trip to Orkney with the tyres set at the pressures stated,1200+ miles with no probs even in the wet coming down over the Lecht on the a939. PRO404 thanks they are  interesting roads up there really enjoyed it well inpressed  with the bike handled every thing.

Pan404, forgot to say the road from Inverness up to John o Groats was great really enjoyed it,the only down side is getting from Nth Wales to Glasgow all motorway, but once above there just brill.

Looks like you've sorted out the psi just need to sort out the North Wales to Glasgow (and beyond) route, for next time.

Last time I passed that way I used as much of the A6 that was left from London to Carlisle overnighting in The Garden House Hotel Gretna. From Gretna taking A75 to Newton Stewart, A714 to Bargrennan, an unclassified road to Straiton and B7045 & A77 to Glasgow picking up the usual tourist route to Fort William &  Glenelg with a B&B for the old ferry to Sky in the morning. You may want to break Gretna to Glenelg into 2 days its a full on 350 miles but it got me to where I wanted to be on day 2 of my Scottish sortie.

hi all, it was a bit difficult to avoid the motorways as we were booked on the Pentland ferry on the  13-00 hrs Monday, so we needed to get up there. The route up was Nth Wales- Dumbarton, Inverness then Gills Bay, the downwards route on the 11-00hrs ferry Frida then gills bay to Cromdale  nr Grantown on Spey, Moffat,  then home on the following Sunday, like I said earlier we really enjoyed it first trip on the cbf which coped with the weight and was not bad on the fuel. I just love being upin Scotland, just to let you know ex trucker use to do all the time so I know quite a bit of it.
