How often should the spark plugs be changed on the mk2 and does anybody know how much a dealer would currently charge for fitting new plugs. I presume the main labour time is getting access to the plugs so if they are being checked wouldn't it be best to just replace them with new ones anyway ?

Inspect every 16k, and replace every 32k according to manual.   :084:

If you're in there anyway you may as well replace them. A set of iridium plugs are less than £30 and will probably outlast your ownership of the bike.

Thanks for the reply. So a dealer probably won't bother looking at them until 32,000 miles then as part of a service !
As you say, if they were going to the trouble of getting to the plugs to inspect them they might as well fit new ones .
I suspect ,as with my last service , a dealer would just say the plugs are still 'serviceable'.
p.s. a motorcycle dealer was telling me recently that spark plugs should be replaced every year , which does seem a bit too often to me but ???

It doesn't work like that.

On a Honda recommended service schedule the spark plugs are removed at 16,000 miles to carry out the valve clearances check, why not check the spark plugs having removed them? Replacing them at 32,000 miles is in line with NGK recommendations of a 40,000 mile service life for platinum or iridium/platinum tipped spark plugs.

If a dealer was to replace those plugs at 16,000 miles there'd be a global cry of 'rip off stealer dealers'

The NGK CR8EHIX-9 appears to be the way forward for efficiency in spark delivery but don't think of them as a fit and forget spark plug. They will still require checking for the likes of burn colour, electrode deposits, insulator and ceramic body damage. I've read that iridium spark plugs can last 80 to 100,000 miles, the CR8EHIX-9 is an iridium/platinum spark plug which I think NGK give an estimated service life of half that, they may even be good to the Honda recommended 48,000 mile service or beyond but in the meantime they will need to be regularly checked.

Why would a dealer (not Honda ) say spark plugs should be replaced once a year? For similar reason that a Honda dealer would say replace spark plugs every two years! They want the workshop hours and spare part sales. I've just laid my hands on a 6 year old low mileage Corsa its not a Honda, its not even a motorcycle but according to the service history its on its fourth set of spark plugs in less than 15,000 miles. that's crazy main dealer servicing right there.

I stand by my two penneth spark plugs (in these types of engines) should be good for 40,000 to 50,000 miles regardless of age or whether they're platinum/platinum or iridium/platinum.

Mine are still original after 6 years and 17000 miles. I won’t be making the mistake of having my valve clearance done until 30000 miles either.

On my previous bike (Fazer 1000), the due mileage was 24000 miles. The mechanic said not to both until the bike was past 30000 miles. I insisted, he did them, give me a full report on their condition. Nothing needed doing! He did tell me I’d be wasting my money, but I wouldn’t listen.  :110:
