If its just to commute 8 miles get a scooter, the ultimate in practical transport, and save the biffer for other stuff.
If it's to replace the biffer entirely you might find you miss the scratchability.
You'll get a honda silverwing for a couple of grand and they are bombproof.

What about suzuki Bandit an older 600 or a newer 650?
Reliable 80hp. Cheap on gas.

My wife rides my old 2003 daily and its been super reliable

If considering older mo'cycles (pre- 2007/Euro 3 compliant) look out for ULEZ coming to a city near you soon.
