and signage of a 30 mph speed limit is the same everywhere in the UK.

Apart from that it does seem unreasonable to offer attendance in an 'awareness' course, but only within Dorset.
Having said that, several years ago I got caught speeding in a car (94mph, Cambridgeshire, national maximum speed limit dual carriageway, Police hand-held radar gun - the road was devoid of traffic, except me, which allowed them to catch me up from a standing start!) but wasn't offered an 'awareness' course and chose to accept the fixed penalty of 60 and 3 points instead of going to court.

Thants great, thanks for the information

That was 5 years ago, things change so do the requirements for an awareness course. The current deal for a fixed penalty SP30 speeding offence, that is speeding up to 30 mph over the posted speed limit, is a 100 fine and 3 penalty points. As far as I know if it is your first driving offence within the past 3 years and your speed was no more than 10% +9 mph over the posted limit the Police have the option to recommend you for an awareness course. it's an option not a given. If the Police see your speeding as excessive expect the 100, 3 point FPN or worse an audience in front of the Magistrates where the penalties can increase to a maximum of a 2,500 fine plus 6 penalty points and disqualification from driving.
