Apart from that it does seem unreasonable to offer attendance in an 'awareness' course, but only within Dorset.
Having said that, several years ago I got caught speeding in a car (94mph, Cambridgeshire, national maximum speed limit dual carriageway, Police hand-held radar gun - the road was devoid of traffic, except me, which allowed them to catch me up from a standing start!) but wasn't offered an 'awareness' course and chose to accept the fixed penalty of £60 and 3 points instead of going to court.

Thants great, thanks for the information

That was 5 years ago, things change so do the requirements for an awareness course. The current deal for a fixed penalty SP30 speeding offence, that is speeding up to 30 mph over the posted speed limit, is a £100 fine and 3 penalty points. As far as I know if it is your first driving offence within the past 3 years and your speed was no more than 10% +9 mph over the posted limit the Police have the option to recommend you for an awareness course. it's an option not a given. If the Police see your speeding as excessive expect the £100, 3 point FPN or worse an audience in front of the Magistrates where the penalties can increase to a maximum of a £2,500 fine plus 6 penalty points and disqualification from driving.
