Brake light won't come on using front brake
« on: 17 September, 2018, 09:38:21 PM »
I guess the title pretty much says it all.

Brake light works fine using the rear brake, but not the front.

Worked last weekend (AFAIK), doesn't work today. Nothing's changed other than the date on the calendar.

Anyone else seen this? Is this a common issue and easily repairable? (I did a search for the same problem but came up blank.)
Old enough to have seen it all, heard it all, done it all. Just can't remember it all.

Most likely the front brake light switch at the lever, quite a common failure but cheap enough to replace.

I get this regularly with my little bikes. Usually damp getting in the switch. I just remove it, easy to unscrew, and spray it with WD40 or whatever, and invariably back to normal. Had to replace one that seized. Had it happen recently after a massive rain storm.

I replaced mine (had stopped working) a few years ago.
It might be more common than is mentioned on here, maybe because it's really simple and cheap to replace.

A proper simple fix this one.

Remove No1 crosspoint screw, wiring and switch. Give a goodly spray and clean with WD40 (other water dispersants are available) check operation by means of multimeter and refit.

Job done.

I've had this problem intermittently but there isn't a micro switch under the brake lever,it looks like someone previous to me has wired it through somehow 🤔

I'll take a pic in a bit, basically the two connecting 'lugs' that should be attached to the micro switch are just linked through where the switch should be 🤔

Just a quick update.

I took my bike into the shop for winter storage and told them the problem. Turns out it's exactly as suggested here on the forum: a minor issue with the micro lever. Replaced, good as new.
