Not a standard fitment, at least not on my 2008 MK1. As its near the battery it might be a plug in point fitted by someone for a battery charger. If you remove the silver adjacent cover with a Allan key it will expose the battery and you will perhaps see if it connects to it. Though looking at your photo again it looks like the screw with the allan key has been replaced with a screw with a cross head to hold the silver cover on.

I have same on my bike, fitted by a previous owner. Assumed it was for a charger.
Anyone know, are the connections standard or will it be for a specific charger?

Looks like a "Tamia" type plug as used on earlier "Optimate" charger/conditioners.  Same as mine, anyway,  that I purchased in 2009.  They changed them a few years ago to a more robust plug but conversion leads are available if you have the latest style.  Obtainable from Optimate direct, M & P, etc. and all the usual suspects.

Cheers.

Yep, it's a plug for a trickle charger and I too have one on mine for an Optimate bought some years ago. Saves having to access the battery and using crocodile clips.
