Weak Brake and fork upgrades

Hi,

Recently bought a 2010 CBF1000GT and love it but the brakes are not the best by a long way. I have replaced all brake pads with EBC 388 HH and they made a slight difference, the same brake pads I put on my CB1000R which almost put me over the handle bars straight away, but I am still not happy with them at all. I travel 99.9% with the wife so the brakes are paramount, as they should be regardless of one or two up.
I had the calipers off and they are all working freely. I know the disc"s are only 296 mm but they should be way better than what they are considering it's classed as a mini Pan Euro, a continent mile muncher..
Has any body changed front forks or done anything radical to upgrade the front end.

I've not done anything structural to my bike.

I, too, felt that the brakes on my Biffer didn't have enough "bite" but I think that's simply a function of the ABS. Grabbing a mittful of front brake in a bike without ABS should be enough to throw you over the bars like you mentioned, but of course ABS doesn't do that. It took me a good season to get used to that (slow learner, I guess) but once I got a grip on working with ABS I became quite comfortable with it.

All that said, I very seldom travel two-up. Best I can suggest at this point is to spend some time two-up in a parking lot somewhere and practice hard braking maneuvers.

Given the above already, and assuming you are not expecting racing performance brakes, I'd be doing the following;

Overhaul the calipers (fully).
Flush new fluid through (empty the masters and fill afresh).
Cleanout the bobbins (spin with brake/carb cleaner).
Check the lines (for any bulging under max pressure).

And expect some decent gains.
Only do it right - no bodging please.   Keeper of the failed stator list.   John.

As jm2 says, some maintenance checks should improve your brakes. I ride 2 up or fully loaded quite a bit and can't fault the braking. If it wasn't for abs I could probably stand it on its nose. Compared to my zzr these are very good brakes.

Is your machine totally standard, even the brake pads?

Brake wise mine is completely standard.
I do have the full luggage kit fitted and still have no problem braking. A two finger pull of the brake lever gets instant braking, even 2 up with luggage. My zzr has a reputation for poor braking. A slight delay between pulling the lever and anything happening.

6500 miles in 12 months and never a concern about stopping.

Hi Rich,

I obviously have an issue and when I get back into the country I will get right onto it. I did an 1100 m trip around Scotland at the start of June and always had to remind myself " The brakes are s**t " so always on the alert when getting nearer traffic or town work. I am wondering if I disconnected the ABS by pulling the fuse, this way I could eliminate all the business end parts?? Worth a try...
