I Believe I Can Fly ..........
on: 08 September, 2016, 08:46:10 PM
It's my birthday today so set of to work all ready for a fun filled day of cake and jollyness.

A couple of minutes from home a van in front of me turns left into a junction and a car sat waiting at the junction waiting to come out onto the main road, where I have right of way, decided to make a break for it and pulled out without looking.

I hit the front of his car as no where to go and no time to do it even if I did have an escape route and I take to the air over the bonnet landing 20 feet up the road. Bike ends up in the middle of the road.

All caught on video with the driver admitting full liability straight to camera though the insurance company have asked me not to publish the video to the public domain as it is "evidence".

Goes down to the local hospital which has a minor injuries who decide it's beyond the capabilities to deal with the injuries and does the ambulance job to the Leeds General Infirmary A&E.

A full day of xrays, prodding and poking, a LOT of swearing and pain like I've never felt before ( I'm an ex squaddie - I've felt pain!!)

Am now home in an immense amount of pain but I'm fixable. Have a concussion from where my head / helmet hit the road, a busted rotator cuff in my left shoulder, some impact damage to ribs and lower back and a swollen and cut left knee.

Luckily nothing broken and that is down to the bike gear.

"All the gear all the time" is a mantra we follow religiously. The gear has saved my life today

Could have been a lot lot worse. The helmet saved my head from squashing like a melon and the bike gear stopped the road ripping my skin to bits.

I've always believed any accident you walk away from is a good accident. Gonna hurt for a few weeks, especially tomorrow but I'm still breathing and means I now get waited on hand and foot by the wife as I can't get out of bed.

As to the bike ....... Well time will tell but she is very very poorly. Poor girl took the brunt of the impact. Waiting on all the insurance stuff to kick in now.

Hurting like hell but feeling VERY VERY VERY lucky.

I was doing less than 25 mph. I dread to think what he was doing as he floored it to get into what he thought was a gap in the traffic even though his entire view to his right was completely blocked by the van turning left.

And yes ....... He ACTUALLY said ........ Sorry mate I didn't see you!

Blimey!
I didn't get to this posting until after our messaging.
No wonder you're totally piffed off.
Commiserations.
After everything you've been through lately, maybe time for a new stead from another stable sooner rather than later....

In the meantime, take a look at this thread:

Sorry to hear about your incident Mark ,and glad that you have got away comparatively lightly,  Hope your bike is not badly damaged ,If only superficial damage and easily repaired  its not always advisable to claim.

Cheers Gents,

Damage is front left side fairing, nose cone, left hand side crash Bung is obliterated, left hand side exhaust all crumpled in, left hand side of top box mashed. Not checked every where yet, will look before they collect the bike and take photos.

He was at fault, will be claiming off his insurance not mine.

You tend to believe you won't get the bumps on your birthday once you leave school...

Ouch.

It's funny (not ha ha) but that scenario is exactly the one that they pointed out to us on a recent Bikesafe course.

I hope you get better soon, Mike. If you need anything, just ask.
