Can't wait to wear my tyres out.
« on: 01 October, 2015, 10:13:51 PM »
My 2K miles old Mk2 came new with BT57's fitted, now in the past I have read the discussions on here about tyres with an amount of scepticism, but oh how the mind changes so quickly! Always thought that tyres are black and round, and that I am obviously not good enough to tell the difference between them. BT57's old tech and slide etc? Never had an issue with them. So out for a ride on Sunday and 10mins in I follow my mate into a bend at a bit of a pace (40 ish) , fairly lent over and whoa S^@t the front slides :005:  It may have been an inch or two. but it felt like a foot and this is gonna hurt crossed my mind! Combined with instant weight loss  :183: Then, that was close. So now I can't wait to wear my tyres out and put something decent on.
Keep it shiney side up Guys.

Or ride to your ability. Don't blame the tyres, admittedly they are not the best, so as said, why wait?

Hi 954martin

As others have said WHY WAIT.  The BT07's first appeared years ago in the Bridgestone stable (it must be approaching 20 years now) and even with possible improvements in compounds used are still 4 generations behind what is available now.   The difference between say a BT30 or a Mich PR4 to the BT057 is huge both in terms of grip (especially in the wet) and longevity.

I bought my MKI 8 years ago and it came with Stone 57's and I swapped my pair early in favour of the Mich PR2's (then the deemed 'leading tyre for the Biffer) and the difference particularly in the wet was appreciable.  The latest iterations are a further quantum leap forward again.   The BT057 were fine in the dry but in the wet or damp conditions, as we experience at this time of year in the very early evening they were  :151: :151:

FWIW my swap of the Stone 57's with only 1500 miles on them was for a bottle of Scotch with somebody living in Spain where, of course, everybody knows it only rains on the plain.  We were both winners but I think I got by far the better deal :001:.

I oft use the expression 'Two Tyres, One Life'  don't take a chance mate if you have the choice.

Andy

I can't believe they still even fit bikes with 57's.

You think you enjoy your ride now , dump the crap tyres and you will see how much the bike is transformed, you may even be able to go round corners .

If theres a gap i can get through it !!!

Some people pay for an IAM... I am mad.....

Doesn't need saying again, but as its "tyres".

Change them.

Even if they look 100% (and they aren't) you have no confidence in them.  Don't wait for another  :005:

Only do it right - no bodging please.   Keeper of the failed stator list.   John.

I know I will get flamed for this comment BUT  not everybody can afford to dump a useable set of tyres.(unless you can stich them into someone else on e bay) :mfrlol:
Although I can recommend a set of Conti Sport Attack if one isn't to worried about wear rates
