I was a Gold Star Instructor, and as you see we spent half our time looking backwards. This was because we had to follow 'Roadcraft' issued by the police which was still based on bikes without signals or mirrors. Thank goodness IAM don't have to teach the same unnecessary (and potentially dangerous in modern day traffic) rotation of heads!

Still some of it is useful at least for some thought. I still on occasion use arm signals to emphasise my change of direction, and even a slow down signal in some circumstances such as when being tailgated through a town.

Of course life savers are still the most important observation when making a major change in direction.
